The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Effutu, Rev. Atta Mensah, has cut sod for the construction of a new PRINDBUZ Complex at the Winneba Local Prison, a project expected to provide inmates with opportunities to acquire practical vocational and entrepreneurial skills.
The proposed facility will include a barbering, hairdressing and make-up salon, creating a structured environment where inmates can receive hands-on training and develop skills that could help them become economically independent after serving their sentences.
The sod-cutting ceremony marks an important step towards the commencement of the project, which seeks to contribute to the rehabilitation and transformation of inmates through skills development.
Speaking at the ceremony, the initiative was described as more than just the construction of a physical facility. It is intended to provide inmates with useful skills that can improve their chances of securing employment or establishing their own businesses when they return to their communities.
Vocational and technical training have increasingly become an important component of the rehabilitation process in correctional facilities. By equipping inmates with practical skills, such programmes can help them build confidence, develop a sense of purpose and prepare for life beyond prison.
The barbering, hairdressing and make-up salon will serve as a practical training centre where beneficiaries can learn skills in personal grooming and beauty services. These skills have the potential to provide income-generating opportunities for trainees upon their reintegration into society.
